Toledo Museum of Art (House of Yatreda)

The Challenge
As TMA reimagines how it presents both contemporary and traditional works, it seeks to elevate digital art to the same prominence as its traditional collections. Central to this vision is the integration of digital innovation directly into the galleries, creating dynamic, immersive experiences that engage a diverse audience. The museum needed display technology that could honor the visual integrity of digital artwork while blending seamlessly into the gallery environment.

Where Ancient Stories Meet Modern Technology
The Vision
Founded in 1901, the Toledo Museum of Art has built its reputation as a forward-thinking institution committed to integrating art into public life through intentional blending of classic artistry with cutting-edge innovation. TMA sought to redefine the museum experience by ensuring digital art is celebrated and recognized among its historical counterparts, connecting more deeply with audiences locally and globally.
Illuminating Ethiopian Cultural Heritage
The Experience
BSX installed four Vision X 163" 4K LED displays in TMA's galleries to showcase the "House of Yatreda" installation within the Ethiopia at the Crossroads exhibit. Created by Ethiopian artist collective Yatreda and led by Creative Director Kiya Tadele, the immersive experience uses modern digital techniques to illuminate Ethiopia's rich cultural heritage. The displays present the "Abyssinian Queen" series, animating the life and journeys of an Ethiopian queen and her followers. The Vision X displays' unparalleled visual clarity, high contrast, and deep grayscale gradients ensure even the smallest details of the black-and-white digital artworks are visible with stunning accuracy, immersing visitors in the Ethiopian concept of tizita, a nostalgic longing for the past.
A New Standard for Digital Art in Museums
The Impact
The integration of Vision X displays allowed TMA to deliver an immersive, engaging, and emotionally impactful exhibit. The flexibility and precision of the displays helped ensure each piece was shown at its best, enhancing storytelling and cultural resonance. Adam Levine, Director and CEO of TMA, remarked: "The Blue Square X team was a joy to work with. They were nimble, helping us problem-solve and deliver an incredible art installation for our audiences. The use of this advanced technology has contributed to the museum's ability to attract a diverse audience, foster community engagement, and promote cross-cultural understanding."
